Saraikies in Hindustan

The language wich is now called saraiki has been given various Name in the past . Western Linguists used name like " Belochki (Burton 1849) " Multani (O'Bren :1881) ,Uchi (Bomford:1895) Jataki (Jukes 1900) shahpuri ,hindi (wilson 1899) Lahnda,Siraiki,Multani,Shahpuri,Hindki (Grierson 1919) Lahndi (Smirnow 1975) and Siraiki (Shackle 1972,1976,2007) for it.Native speakers Had called it by the names of the areas wjere it was spoken . Richard Burton also wrote a grammar of what he called "Siraiki" (Burton 1849: 84-5). One such officer was Edward 0 Brien, who emphasized that Multani (Saraiki) was different from Lahori (Punjabi) (1882: 72). A missionary Andrew Jukes (1847-1931) agreeing with him, used the word 'Westrn Punjabi' for it (Shackle 1983: 22). This word also used by Trevor Bomford an other missionary and is important because it was used by George Grierson in his linguistic survey (Bomford 1895: Grierson : Vol 4 , 233- 332). Grierson choose the word 'Lahnda' western Punjabi for this language (Gankovski 1964: 110). The history of the region of Saraikistan goes back to Mahabharata (Rahman 2004: 11). When Al-Beruni the famous Indologist gives the list of countries or states of old India he discusses the Saraiki region as an independent state by the name Sauvira. Al-Beruni says, "the name of the countries in the South West (Nairrita): Kamboja, Sindhu, Sauvira that is Multan and Jahrawar," (Al-Beruni 1030 translated by Edward C. Sachau in 1992: 300-302). The countries of Sindhu and Sauvira are mentioned in Mahbaharta and can be taken from Sindh province and lower (Saraiki) Punjab (Rahman 2004: 11). Ahmad Hassan Dani the famous Pakistani Historian explains Sauvira and asserts that present day Saraiki region is in fact Sauvira which was a state as discussed by Al-Beruni's Kitab --Ul-Hind. In his own words he says: "If we accept this suggestion, it is not difficult to understand why the Sindhi language is confined to the lower Indus while Saraiki is now spoken in much the same area where Sauvira is located by Alberuni. With this understanding of the Saraiki-speaking area, we can now say that the very name Saraiki is probably a corruption of the original term Sauviraki (Dani 1981:36).However ,after 1970, it was finally decided that wor " Saraiki " should be used for this language.

Saraiki is the language of love and literature .Saraiki is the most widely spoken language in Pakistan and the first language of more than 120 million people in the World.Among those 80 Million are in Pakistan (2008). Saraiki is a language of great antiquity in Pakistan. It served as "Lingua Franca" among the people living around i.e. the Bloch and Sindhis, the Pashtoons etc. for centuries. It also remained the language of commerce and trade until recent times. It has been variably called by different names such as Seraiki, siraiki, Baluchki, Partake , Shahpuri , Jagdali, Riasti, Lanhda,Bahawalpuri, Derewali, Multani, Western Punjabi, Uchi, Thallochi, Shahpuri and Hindko in past by neighboring people .Saraiki people are different in their food habits, dress, folk dances, games, amusements, mindset and psyche. They love their language & homeland and are often reluctant to leave their birthplace contrary to Punjabis and Pashtoons. The main cities are princely state of Bahawalpur and the districts of Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Sehwan, Sanghar, Nawabshah, Hyderabad, Sindh, Mirpurkhas, Multan, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, MuzafarGarh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Dera Ismail Khan, Karachi. A significant number of Seraikis also reside in India, with most concentrated in the state of Punjab, Maharashtra and Gujarat. . A significant number of Seraikis also reside in Afghanistan.

The word "Sarāiki" originated from the word "سوویرا" Sauvira .a state name in old India . By adding adjectival suffix "-ki" to the word "Sauvirā" it became "Sauvirāki". {Sauvira was a kingdom mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. According to the epic, Jayadratha was the king of Sindhus, Sauviras and Sivis. Probably Sauvira and Sivi were two kingdoms close to the Sindhu kingdom and Jayadratha conquered them.According to some texts, Sauvira was south of Sindhu in the delta of the Indus river; while later historians (Al-Beruni) considered Sauvira to represent Saraiki waseb, including Multan, Mithankot and adjacent areas at the region of the confluence of Indus river with other rivers of Punjab. Sauvira is presumed to be derived from two words: Su (great or good) or Sau (one hundred) and Veer (brave or wise). Sauviraki, the language spoken by inhabitants of the Sauvira kingdom, is currently known as Saraiki and has spread to the entire south and southwest parts of Punjab.(Dr. A H Dani) and Bahauddin Zakariya University, in Multan, department established 2006.

Saraiki poetry ( Na Parnejeen Doji ZaaL)

Kya hey Hindu Multani ?

In 1947, the Hindus, who left Pakistan for India under the exchange of population programme, were from the provinces of Bahawalpur, Multan, Faislabad, Miawali, Jhung, Derawal, Deraghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Dera Islamil Khan, Reheemyar Khan, Banu, Sargodha, Khamwal, Liaya, Rajanpur and Bhakad, etc. After partition in 1947, Hindu Multani people settled primarily in Haryana, Delhi and Punjab, however the pockets are well established every where including Mumbai. Despite the hardship of being refugees in India, Multani people worked hard to gain dignity, education and economic prosperity. Today they surpass any local community in terms of social and economic status.

Eae Kya bulenden?

Most of the younger generation of Multani living in India or around the world do not speak or understand this beautiful language known as SARAIKI (Shahmukhi: سرائیکی, Gurmukhi: ਸਰਾਇਕੀ, Devanagari: सराइकी), also spelled Siraiki and Seraiki), but they can still connect with it remembering from their grand parents and parents.

Apne aap kun kya aaden?

Multani people in India often call themselves either Punjabi or Khatri or Punjabi Khatri by default when it comes to arrange marriages. Some of the common last names of Multani's are Kapoor, Madan, Khatreja, Chugh, Kohli, Dhamija, Hasija, Kukreja, Sethi, Dhingra, Asija, Virmani, Thakural, Saluja, Chandna, Pahuja, Chutani, Tutlani, Gugnani, Dudeja, Wadhwa, Kakkar, Makkar, Sikri, Chopra, Mehta, Batra, Khanna, Arora, Chaudhary, Juneja, Chawla, Dawra, Giridhar, Chandna, Kamra, Mal, Goswami, Nagpal, Bajaj, Grover, Narang, Mongia, Gera, Khunger, Malhotra, Sardana, Munjal, Ahuja, Shridhar, Luthra, Taneja, Bhutani, Khurana, Pahwa, Jagia, Bhatia, Dureja, Dhawan, Khattar, Sachdeva, Rajpal, Derewal, bannaul Wadhwa and most of the punjabi last names which end with a sound 'aah'

First word...

I have started this blog to share information for "Hindu Multani Caste" and its dying culture. I would keep on posting multani jokes, saraiki music and videos from various sources. Hope you will come here everyday to check something new which will refresh your mind from your busy hectic life. I want each one of you to spread MULTANI (mother tongue of all multanis) so that it again becomes a language of preference.
